May - Climbing Event at Glasgow climbing centre
Planning on organising an event at the Glasgow Climbing centre - if you are already a climber maybe you could get in touch if you would like to help out - date etc to be arranged.
April - weekend in the Lake District
This is advance notice for the Lake District walking weekend. It is going to be held on the weekend of the 25th/26th April and we'll be basing ourselves in Ambleside.
At the moment there is a plan to do a couple of high level mountain walks. These would only be suitable for walkers with previous experience of this kind of walking (i.e. 7-8 hours of walking with a total ascent of more than 900m). However, if we have a group of people keen to do some low level walking it should be possible to arrange an alternative itinerary, provided that someone else is prepared to take responsibility for leading. The area around Ambleside is fantastic for low level rambling as there is an extensive network of public footpaths, most of them very well sign-posted.
The rough plan is :
Friday 24th April: Drive down to the Lakes after work. AA route planner tells me that it will take just under 3 hours from the Transport Museum. There's a wide variety of accommodation available in Ambleside, including two hostels (www.englishlakesbackpackers.co.uk and https://www.yha.org.uk/find-accommodation/the-lake-district/hostels/Ambleside/index.aspx). Meet for dinner and planning.
Saturday 25th April: A high level walk from the Langdale valley. Possibly Crinkle Crags and Bowfell. A low level walk could also be done from Langdale, e.g. over to Elterwater. Group night out in Ambleside.
Sunday 26th April: A high level walk in the Coniston fells or the Fairfield Horseshoe. Again a low level walk could be done starting from the same point as the high level walk: e.g. on the tracks in and around the coppermines valley. Head back to Glasgow after walk.
If you are interested in coming along or have any questions please e-mail me at andrewjthurston@hotmail.com I'd be grateful if you could let me know what kind of walking you'd be hoping to do and whether or not you're willing to volunteer as a driver.

HAPPY 1 YEAR BIRTHDAY
GLASGOW YOUNG WALKERS!!
A big thanks to our group leader, all on the comittee, walk leaders, event organisers, and all walkers. This year has been a fantastic inaugral year for the club and there is a very birght future. Everyone seems to have enjoyed all of the events the club has organised over the past year, whether it be a cloud and snow covered hike up a mountain or a few drinks at the local. Thankyou to all involved!
The Birthday Party was fantastic last night and a big thanks to all who helped make it happen.
Congratulations to all those who won awards and to 'G'day Mate I can see the pub from here!' on winning the extremely tricky quiz.
And now a few messages:
Calling new walk leaders! It would be great if people who have not lead a walk before would like to contribute to the club by leading a walk. It is easy to pick a walk, there are plenty of walking books available in the library and bookshops. Or pick a place you’d like to go and search on the internet for ideas. The tourist board and national parks produce booklets.
Low level walks needed! We are short on low level walks for the summer and these are a good starting point if you haven't lead a walk before.
You don’t need to lead alone! If you are not sure about leading a walk on your own and would like to lead a walk jointly with someone else then please email Glasgow Young Walkers and we will pair you up with someone.
Remember - Everyone that goes on a walk is responsible for themselves, you are not exptected to be a qualified mountain leader.
We do have equipment such as maps, first aid kits and an outdoor shelter that we can give you before your walk .
We will be continuing to invest money from the Ramblers' Association in equipment, books and maps.
We haven't got many socials planned for the summer, if you;d like to organise one then email back with dates and locations. In the past we've organised pub nights, ceilidhs and bowling. New ideas always welcome. If you would like to lead a walk/organise an event or suggest a walk or event for the group please contact us at any time at: glasgowyoungwalkers@yahoo.co
4 June 2008
Welcome to June folks and looks like summer is on the verge. Let's hope so. Bute this weekend for anyone who is keen. I'm hoping to see some seals...
8 May 2008
What superb week of weather by they way! One of those weeks where I wish I could get out of the office and onto the mountains mid-week. Oh well. I guess a Sadly will do. Our one year anniversary is coming up too.
Please see the Event Calendar page for the slightly revised programme for May and some walking dates for your diary over the next few months.
We are are aiming to use this website to advertise walk and event info as well as the usual e-mails. This is in case you don't receive the e-mails as the system has been a bit slow over the last few months.
If you would like to lead a walk/organise an event or suggest a walk or event for the group please contact us at any time at: glasgowyoungwalkers@yahoo.co
Please remember to e-mail Glasgow Young Walkers your Ramblers Association number once you have joined as we don't get this automatically sent to us.
We will be updating the mailing lists again at the end of May so please make sure you have joined up to stay on the list from the 1st June. When joining remember to state that it is Glasgow Young Walkers ST23 you wish to join so that you are allocated to our group.
The next walk will be on Saturday 10th May - The Merrick, details to follow shortly.
29 April 2008
G'day folks. The programme for the coming months is on the verge. Watch this space soon. The group is still looking for walk leaders and as we are looking to increase the number of walks over the summer months.
The weather looks improving!! It'll most likely be a Munro or a similar high-level walk this weekend. Please email j.laurence@bmjarchitects.co.uk.
Also, a walk has been added for the following weekend (10th May) in the lovely Southern Uplands.
I'm going back to watch this fantastic thunderstorm...
